Does the Boat have to be hauled out?
For a pre
purchase survey yes, for a C&V survey not necessarily.
What about the engine?
Most surveyors use
visual methods, and can check the operation (If in the water), check
for overheating signs, condition of mounts, beds hoses, belts and
fluids and controls. I recommend if a buyer has any concerns that a
mechanic be hired separately to give an opinion of the engine
condition e.g. compression test.
What about sea trials ?
I recommend sea trials
if possible, this takes a little extra time but gives both the buyer
and the surveyor a much better idea of the condition of the Yacht.
What about the Sails?
Sails are examined
visually for wear stains and stitching of seams. Generally the
surveyor is working alone and does not have the space or the
manpower to spread them out. Sail Shape can only determined during
sailing trials.
What about the contract?
You should always
make provision to make your offer based on the completion of survey. Then if something major is found, you may either request repairs or
adjust the purchase price accordingly. Otherwise you may cancel the
sale if not satisfied.
